Trace Metal Enrichment in the Colloidal Fraction in Soils Developing on Abandoned Mine Spoils

چکیده
The release of colloid-bound trace metals from abandoned coal mine spoils can potentially be a significant source contamination during weathering. We examined the size-dependent enrichment in spoil samples using centrifugation and acid extraction to compare metal loading bulk colloid fractions. A combination X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), focused ion beam (FIB) sectioning selected colloids for transmission (TEM) analyses was used determine morphology elemental mineral composition at micro- nanoscales. In contrast soils, primary Fe-sulfides (up 11%) secondary Fe(III)-bearing phases 5%) were portion mineralogy. Secondary Fe-(hydro)oxides (hydroxy)sulfates enriched Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, these showed stronger correlations Fe fraction (R2 0.58, 0.77, 0.94, 0.81, respectively) than 0.40, 0.09, 0.84, 0.62, respectively), indicating that Fe-bearing are likely major trace-metal-bearing phases. results this study will help design better remediation projects account underappreciated mode contaminant transport.

Contamination by trace elements of agricultural soils around Sidi Bou Othmane in abandoned mine tailings in Marrakech, Morocco
This study was carried out for the purpose of investigating the issue of tailings dams as a potential source of contamination by trace elements in soils at the Sidi Bou Othmane mine in the Marrakech Region, Morocco. Soil samples taken from depths of up to 15 cm and within a radius of 50 m from the tailings dams, were analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn using atomic absorption spectrometry. Average c...

متن کاملInvestigation on Health Effects of an Abandoned Metal Mine
To investigate potential health risks associated with exposure to metals from an abandoned metal mine, the authors studied people living near an abandoned mine (n=102) and control groups (n=149). Levels of cadmium, copper, arsenic, lead, and zinc were measured in the air, soil, drinking water, and agricultural products. To assess individual exposure, biomarkers of each metal in blood and urine ...

Effect of Soil Ameliorators on Ectomycorrhizal Fungal Communities that Colonize Seedlings of Pinus densiflora in Abandoned Coal Mine Spoils
In this study, the effect of soil ameliorators on ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal communities in coal mine spoils was investigated. Organic fertilizers and slaked lime were applied as soil ameliorators in 3 abandoned coal mine spoils. One year after the initial treatment, roots of Pinus densiflora seedlings were collected and the number of ECM species, colonization rate, and species diversity were...
